The beautiful face and expressive eyes of Meena Kumari have been captured in a Google doodle devoted to the late legendary actress Meena Kumari for her 85th birth anniversary on Wednesday.

"As shown in the doodle, Meena Kumari captivated audiences with her beautiful, expressive eyes," according to the official Google Doodle page.

Born in 1933, Meena Kumari grew up on camera, lighting up the silver screen from the age of four when she was known as Baby Meena. She became a formidable actor in Indian cinema, appearing in more than 90 films during her 38-year career.

She portrayed strong yet vulnerable women who made their own way through life, although they were often devastated by romance. This gave her the epithet 'Tragedy Queen'. She came to be known for sailing through complex emotions on-screen with ease.

Some of her memorable films include "Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam", "Pakeezah", "Mere Apne", "Aarti", "Baiju Bawra", "Parineeta", "Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai", "Foot Path", "Dil Ek Mandir" and "Kaajal".

Meena Kumari was not only an iconic star of Hindi cinema, she was also a poet of great flair and delicacy.

She died in 1972 due to liver cirrhosis.

Bill seeking death penalty for child rape passed: Things you should know

According to the new bill, there will be stringent punishment for rapists of girls under 12

The Lok Sabha on Monday passed the Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill 2018, which will allowsthe death penalty to those convicted of raping girls below the age of 12.

The bill seeks to replace an ordinance promulgated by the government in April after an outcry over the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua in Jammu & Kashmir.

The Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill 2018 was supported by most members across the political spectrum and passed by a voice vote, PTI reported. Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said, "The stringent law was aimed at providing safety to minor girls."

Here are few things you should know about the Bill:

1. According to the new bill, there will be stringent punishment for rapists of girls under 12. The punishment for rape of a woman aged under 12 years will be rigorous imprisonment of at least 20 years but may extend to imprisonment for life or death.

2. The minimum punishment in cases of rape of women has been increased from the rigorous imprisonment of seven years to 10 years, extendable to life imprisonment.

Maratha quota stir: Internet blocked in Navi Mumbai after clashes, arson

He said Reliance Defence has the largest shipyard in the private sector at Pipavav in Gujarat and is currently building five Naval Offshore Patrol Vessels (NOPVs) for the Indian Navy and 14 Fast Patrol Vessels for the Indian Coast Guard.

A mob of around 3,000 to 5,000 people vandalised BJP MLA Rushikesh Patel's office.

In all, 17 people, including Hardik Patel, were charged with arson, rioting, and criminal conspiracy.

Patel was arrested and released on bail, and subsequently barred by the court from entering Mehsana district.

As the Maratha quota stir intensified, agitators clashed with the police and torched vehicles at several places on Tuesday

Mumbaikars on Wednesday braced for a Mumbai bandh after large-scale violence marred a state-wide protest on Tuesday by Maratha outfits demanding reservations for the community in Maharashtra, where a constable died and nine other policemen were injured amid a suicide attempt by three agitators.

As the stir for reservations in jobs and education intensified, the Maratha Kranti Morcha, which is spearheading the agitation, is taking its battle to Mumbai where it has called for the shutdown. Another outfit, the Sakal Maratha Samaj, called for a bandh on Wednesday in Navi Mumbai and Panvel as well.

India sees major reduction in HIV infections but challenges remain: UN

India saw a major reduction in the number of new HIV infections , AIDS-related deaths and people living with HIV from 2010 to 2017 on the back of sustained and focussed efforts, according to a UN report which warned that the epidemic was growing in Pakistan.

The Joint UN Agency on AIDS (UNAIDS) report titled 'Miles to go closing gaps, breaking barriers, righting injustices' said Asia and the Pacific regions have made strong inroads with its HIV response.

Sustained and focused efforts to reach key populations have led to major reductions in HIV infections in Cambodia, India, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam between 2010 and 2017.

The report, however, warned that the global new HIV infections were not declining fast enough. It also noted that the epidemics were expanding in Pakistan and the Philippines.

In India, new HIV infections dropped from 120,000 in 2010 to 88,000 in 2017, AIDS-related deaths from 160,000 to 69,000 and people living with HIV from 2,300,000 to 2,100,000 in the same time period, the report said.

The offer will begin at 5.01 PM on Friday, the timing that reflects the Rs 501 price tag of the JioPhone. The registration for new JioPhone is already live on the official website of Relaince Jio.

"Jio will start monsoon hungama scheme from 5.01 pm on July 20. Even the timing has been kept to reflect effective price of the phone," the source told PTI.

Glenmark Pharma gets final nod from USFDA for cholesterol lowering drug

Health News : Glenmark Pharmaceuticals has received final approval from the US health regulator for Colesevelam Hydrochloride for oral suspension, used to lower cholesterol levels in the blood.

The approval has been granted by the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) in the strengths of 1.875 grams/packet and 3.75 grams/packet, the company said in a BSE filing on Tuesday.

The approved product is a generic version of Daiichi Sankyo Inc's Welchol.

Quoting IQVIA sales data for the 12-month period ended May 2018, the company said Welchol achieved annual sales of around $73 million.

The company's current portfolio consists of 138 products authorised for distribution in the US market, and 62 Abbreviated New Drug Applications (ANDAs) are pending approval with the USFDA, it added. Read Complete Article

Indian Railways is planning to construct a dedicated high-speed railway line alongside the under-construction Nagpur-Mumbai Super Express, which is also known as Samriddhi Mahamarg. The high-speed railway line will reduce the travel time by up to 10 hours once it is completed. Currently, it takes around 13 to 14 hours to reach from Mumbai to Nagpur and vice-verse via rail.

"The line will run parallel to the Expressway and benefit thousands of passengers, farmers and traders, in both directions,” Piyush Goyal said.

Indian Railways, Maha Metro Rail Corporation Limited and the state government have signed a MoU to build a Mass Rapid Transit System in Nagpur. The aim to is to connect the railway line with the existing metro coaches.

Jharkhand: Swami Agnivesh thrashed by youth wing of BJP

Social Activist Swami Agnivesh was on Tuesday thrashed by workers of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Agnivesh was in Jharkhand's Pakur to attend an event and was in his hotel when a mob of the ABVP and Yuva Morcha workers surrounded him.

The workers were protesting against Agnivesh and were raising slogans like, "Agnivesh Go Back!!"

Reacting to the incident, Agnivesh said that there was no police personnel present outside the hotel and that he wanted to establish a dialogue with the mob. However as soon as he stepped out of the hotel, he claimed that the mob began thrashing him.

"There was no police personnel present there. Even when I repeatedly called the Superintendent of Police and the District Magistrate, they didn't turn up. I told the mob that there was no need to protest, they can come in and talk. No one came in at that time. When I left the hotel they suddenly attacked and hurled abuses at me, "he said.

He also urged the authorities to nab the culprits and take action against them.

Veteran actress Rita Bhaduri dead at 62

Veteran performer Rita Bhaduri , who worked widely in movies and network shows, including the progressing "Nimki Mukhiya", kicked the bucket here on Tuesday, said a source from the doctor's facility where she was conceded for over seven days.

Rita was at the Sujay Hospital in Vile Parle. She was battling a feeble kidney and was on dialysis.

"She passed on at around 1.30 a.m. what's more, her relatives took her body from the healing facility at around 4 a.m.," the source told IANS.

Zama Habib, maker and author of "Nimki Mukhiya", said that by one means or another he knew it would happen.

"We were at the healing facility the previous evening. Her condition was bad. We have dropped the present shoot because of her death," Habib told IANS.

In "Nimki Mukhiya", she was viewed as an Imarti Devi, the grandma of the house.

What will happen to her character?

"The last time she shot for the show was just about 15 days back. We were sitting tight for her to recoup. Today is her burial service. We will perceive what should be possible," said Habib, who portrayed her as a "pearl of a man".

Airtel Payments Bank gets RBI nod to add new customers, can use e-KYC

The payments bank ran into a controversy after it allegedly opened savings accounts for existing customers without their express permissions.

These accounts allegedly led to government LPG subsidies worth Rs 1.68 billion being transferred to Airtel Payments Bank accounts even as many of the customers weren’t aware of that.

“We thank the authorities for the approvals. We remain committed to the Government’s vision of financial inclusion and banking for all,” a spokesperson said.

Motorola, a Lenovo-owned smartphone manufacturer, will launch the Moto E5 Plus in India today i.e. July 10. The Moto E5 Plus would be the third Motorola device in India to feature an 18:9 aspect ratio screen. The Amazon-exclusive smartphone would also boast a mammoth 5,000 mAh battery.

Last month, the company launched the Moto G6 and Moto G6 Play in India that were the first Motorola phones with modern screens. While the Moto G-series offers value for money proposition in affordable segment, the Moto E-series is battery-centric and comes with bigger capacity batteries.

The Moto E4 Plus, which was the last Moto E-series smartphone launched in India, also had a 5,000 mAh battery.

Moto E5 Plus specifications

In terms of design, the Moto E5 Plus would look similar to the recently launched Moto G6. However, instead of glass, the E5 Plus would sport a glossy plastic rear with reflective outlook. In terms of features and specifications, the E5 Plus would sport a 6-inch IPS LCD screen of HD+ resolution. The phone would be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 system-on-chip (SoC), a quad core processor that runs at a maximum frequency of 1.4Ghz, paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage.

Every year in the beginning of June, millions of students take the Gaokao, China’s National College Entrance Examination. This year, more than 10 million students took the exam across China, reports CNBC.

What is Gaokao?

Gaokao is a prerequisite for entrance to almost all higher education institutions at the undergraduate level in China. It is usually taken by students in their last year of senior high school. However, there has been no age restriction since 2001. The exams last about nine hours and are held over a period of two days, depending on the province. Chinese and mathematics are included in all tests. An English test was formerly required of all students, but now Japanese, Russian or French may be taken instead.

Why the Gaokao examination day is marked as a national holiday

Gaokao is termed as a national event on a par with a public holiday. However, people don’t have fun on the two days, as the future of their children depends on their performance in Gaokao. During the examination, construction work is halted near examination halls, so as not to disturb the students, and traffic is diverted. Ambulances are present outside the examination halls in case of nervous collapses, and police cars patrol to keep the streets quiet, according to the Guardian.

CM Adityanath announces plastic ban in Uttar Pradesh from July 15

After Maharashtra, the Uttar Pradesh government has banned the use of several plastic products, news agency ANI reported on Friday.

"We have issued an order to ban the use of plastic ban across the state from July 15," Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was quoted as saying by ANI. "After July 15, plastic cups, glasses, and polythene should not be used," said Adityanath, adding, "For this, we should all work together."

Paytm, Future Group, Flipkart plan $100 mn content push to take on Amazon

Major e-commerce and retail players, including Paytm, Future Group and Flipkart, are set to invest close to $100 million in procuring and incorporating entertainment content, in a bid to take on Amazon India.

According to sources, Paytm, which recently announced a host of new features in ‘Inbox’, its in-app messaging service, including live TV, news, cricket, entertainment videos and games, is planning to invest close to $30 million in this sector.

Kishore Biyani-led Future Group is planning to make significant investments in creating a separate entertainment vertical on the company’s various apps and has set aside close to $14.5 billion for on-boarding artificial intelligence and machine learning on its platform to support entertainment content. It is also in talks with various entertainment content providers as well as movie theatre chains to provide tickets online as well as offline.

Reliance Industries Limited announced on Thursday the launch of Jio Phone 2, which will have popular social media apps, and high-speed Jio GigaFibre, a broadband service that aims to boost fixed-line connectivity in India.

At its 41st Annual General Meeting in Mumbai, the company demonstrated the new features on screen, explaining how YouTube, Facebook and WhatsApp on the upgraded Jio Phone 2, which boasts a horizontal screen display, will respond to a customer's voice.

Jio Phone 2, priced at Rs 2,999, will hit the market on August 15. Under a monsoon offer, the company said, feature phones can be exchanged for Jio Phones for Rs 501.

RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani, India's richest man, also spelt out the milestones achieved by Jio, which has disrupted the telecom industry and triggered a price war.

"We have more than 25 million Jio Phone users in India. We are now taking the Jio Phone to the next level, with added capabilities and functionalities," Ambani said.

He spoke at length about his vision for broadband in India. "We will now extend fibre connectivity to homes, merchants, small and medium enterprises and large enterprises simultaneously across 1,100 cities to offer the most advanced fibre-based broadband connectivity solutions."

Sonali Bendre suffering from high grade cancer

Actress Sonali Bendre says she has been diagnosed with a "high-grade cancer" and she is undergoing treatment in New York.

The actress on Wednesday took to Twitter and Instagram to share the news about her health. She has thanked her family and friends for supporting her.

In a long post, Sonali said: "Sometimes, when you least expect it, life throws you a curveball. I have recently been diagnosed with a high grade cancer that has metastised, which we frankly did not see coming.

"A niggling pain led to some tests, which led to this unexpected diagnosis. My family and close friends have rallied around me, providing the best support system that anyone can ask for. I am very blessed and thankful for each of them," she added.

The actress is undergoing treatment in New York.

"There is no better way to tackle this, than to take swift and immediate action. And so, as advised by my doctors, I am currently undergoing a course of treatment in New York. We remain optimistic and I am determined to fight every step of the way.
