Karti Chidambaram in custody, to appear in court today: Top 10 developments

A regular CBI court on Thursday will hear the agency, which sought a 15-day remand of Karti Chidambaram in the INX Media case

1519873915-3361

Karti Chidambaram, businessman and former finance minister P Chidambaram's son, will be produced before the Patiala House Court on Thursday in connection with the so-called INX Media money-laundering case. Karti had been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) at the Chennai airport on Wednesday morning and taken into custody by a team of CBI officers on his return from the United Kingdom. He was produced before a Delhi court, which sent him to CBI custody for one day.

Karti Chidambaram's remand will last until 12.30 pm on Thursday when a regular CBI court will hear the probe agency. The central probe agency had sought a 15-day remand for his custodial interrogation.

He will be produced before a CBI court on Thursday, All India Radio News has reported.

The CBI justified Karti's arrest by taking the ground of his non-cooperation and frequent foreign visits. CBI Prosecutor V K Sharma told the court that Karti had been repeatedly travelling abroad, which "confirmed apprehensions" that he would flee the country.

Further, the agency argued that one of the grounds for arresting Karti was the recorded statement of Indrani Mukerjea, former director of INX Media (P) Ltd.

Opposition Congress described Karti's arrest as vendetta and a diversionary tactic by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Karti, for his part, said the "whole exercise" was meant to "politically target" his father.

Opposing the CBI's arguments in court, senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Karti Chidambaram, said it was a "bizarre" case. Singhvi argued that there were no grounds for the arrest.

Here are the top 10 developments around Karti Chidambaram's arrest and the INX Media money-laundering case:

1) Karti to be produced before Delhi Court: Karti Chidambaram will be produced before the Patiala House Court on Thursday in connection with the INX Media money-laundering case, according to news agency ANI. Untitled-design-29-2-644x362

Veteran actor Sridevi's mortal remains are still in Dubai, pending paperwork. After receiving the Autopsy report, the Dubai police has started examining the circumstances of the actor's death. According to media reports, police are trying to recreate the sequence of events leading up to her death and have questioned those accompanying her, including her husband.

Meanwhile, Indian Envoy to UAE Navdeep Suri assured that the Indian embassy was trying hard to send Sridevi's body to India at the earliest.

"Our embassy and consulate are working closely with local authorities to expedite the return of Sridevi's mortal remains and also keeping Kapoor family apprised. It is our endeavour to send mortal remains of Sridevi to India at the earliest, " Suri told ANI.

Sridevi's death took a new twist on Monday as her autopsy report revealed that she died due to accidental drowning and not cardiac arrest as reported earlier. The autopsy report has also revealed that there were traces of alcohol in her blood.

Today, her body will be moved to the AL Muhaisana embalming unit and will be repatriated to Mumbai once all the paperwork and investigation has been completed.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5, Note 5 Pro sale begins today on Flipkart, Mi Store

DWfwk5fUQAAtUCz

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi seems in no mood to slow down. Its latest phones, the Redmi Note 5 and Note 5 Pro, seem similar on the first look but are very different devices. While the Note 5 adds ultra-wide screen along with enhanced camera on the back when compared with the Note 4, the Note 5 Pro is a new package with substantial upgrades.

The Note 5 and Note 5 Pro, launched on February 14, would go on sale today, exclusively on home-grown e-commerce platform Flipkart and Xiaomi’s Mi Store. As for the price and variants, the Redmi Note 5 comes in two storage and RAM combinations – 32GB/3GB and 64GB/4GB – priced at Rs 9,999 and Rs 11,999, respectively. The Redmi Note 5 Pro comes with 64GB internal storage but in two RAM variants – 4GB and 6GB – priced at Rs 13,999 and Rs 16,999, respectively.

Here is a quick comparison review of Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro:

On the front, the Note 5 and the Pro look similar: Both feature 18:9 screens. On the back, the Note 5 looks similar to the Note 4, but better. The Pro, on the other hand, looks like an iPhone X clone, without the all-glass build. But the vertical dual-camera set-up is a dead ringer.

The phones feel heavy but their tall stance make them easy to hold; but because of the ultra-wide display, one-handed operation is difficult.

Both phones sport 5.99-inch fullHD+ screens with 18:9 aspect ratios, covered with reflective Gorilla Glass, which hampers sunlight visibility. The screen, though an IPS unit, lacks both the maximum brightness level and vividness. But, the rounded corners of the screen look better than pointed edges, and the curved sides of the glass are easy to operate. There is no shift in colours when looked from angles and the slim side bezels leave enough space to hold the device without accidentally touching the screen area – something common in next-generation bezel-less smartphones.

The Note 5 features a 12-megapixel (MP) primary camera and a 5MP selfie shooter; the Pro’s dual-camera set-up uses a 12MP sensor sourced from Sony in combination with a 5MP sensor sourced from Samsung.

The primary camera in the Note 5 is an improved unit over its predecessor. The 5MP front camera is on par with the predecessor in terms of performance.

This Valentine's Day, plenty of heartache for India's rose cultivators

Rose growers in South India, mainly Hosur, have for many years spread the scent of love on Valentine's Day around the world. But the world seems to have jilted them for other options this time

1518580310-1597

Love may be in the air for the rest of the world as it celebrates Valentine's Day on February 14. But for rose growers in Tamil Nadu, particularly those in Hosur, this Valentine season has been anything but rosy. The reason: People around the world seem to be jilting them and showering more love on their Kenyan counterparts.

While Indian growers have seen their rose exports declining drastically amid stiff competition from Kenya, market prices in the existing markets have also fallen. And, these are happening at a time when the cultivation cost is rising, too.

Earlier, Valentine’s Day on February 14 alone contributed 25-40 per cent of flower growers’ annual revenue. But not this time.

Unlike 2017, which was drought year, flowers this year have been of a good quality, given good rains and climatic conditions. However, the different export markets this time have been affected by disparate reasons, say the growers in Hosur.

Hosur and Bengaluru are hubs for flower cultivation in South India, while Pune and parts of Gujarat account for the bulk of cultivation in the northern parts.

Of the country's flower production, 25-35 per cent is accounted for by Hosur alone. In terms of production in South India, the town has a share of 75 per cent, according to Najeeb Ahmed, managing director of Tanflora Infrastructure Park, one of the largest exporters.

A joint venture between Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) and MNA & Associates, Tanflora has a capacity of producing 67.5 million of roses every year.

The reasons for heartache

Some countries like Australia have lately tightened their regulations to allow the import of only fumigated flowers, for which Indian cultivators lack large-scale capabilities. The exports to other strong markets like Singapore and Malaysia are also impacted this year, as the Chinese New Year falls on February 16. “The Chinese diaspora, which are a large part of the population in these countries, would be travelling to China. So, the demand for imported rose from them will get capped,” said Bala Siva Prasad, president of the Hosur Small Farmers' Association.

Drinking hot tea can increase risk of esophageal cancer

hot-tea_650x400_41517983851

Smokers and drinkers should avoid hot tea, as, according to a study, it can increase the risk of esophageal cancer.

The cancer, which starts in the esophagus, was already known to be linked to Drinking alcohol and smoking, but those risks are heightened by the addition of daily cups of "burning hot" tea, scientists discovered.

The risks to smokers also increase with high-temperature tea drinking, said the study, which examined data on 456,155 Chinese adults ages 30 to 79.

Lv Jun, of Peking University Health Science Centre in China, who co-authored the study, told The Telegraph: "Boiling hot tea will harm the cells in the oesophagus. "If the person also drinks alcohol and smokes, then the harm caused will be more heightened."

At the start of the study, none of the participants had cancer. Researchers followed half of the participants for at least nine years.

During the study, 1,731 people developed esophageal tumours.

Rates of the disease are relatively high in China, where tea drinking is common and many men smoke and drink.

Chinese people often drink tea from flasks that they carry with them to their workplace and regularly fill up with hot water.

Very few Chinese drink traditional British tea, which less hot than Chinese varieties as it also usually taken with cold milk.

People in Russia, Turkey and South America enjoy their tea very hot, with many regularly drinking it at temperatures above 149 degrees Fahrenheit (65 degrees Celsius).

Past research has shown that tea can help to protect against tumours in the digestive tract.

But studies have also suggested that hot liquids and food can cause "thermal injury" which can increase the risk factors associated with cancer.

The findings have been published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

Revenue in the final three months of last year increased 13 per cent to $88.3 billion, according to the California- based technology giant.
