Irvine, California-based Vizio makes affordable flat screen televisions, soundbars and LCD monitors. Founded in 2002, the company is now one of the largest manufacturers of TV sets in the United States.

With its global base of monthly active users growing to 1.71 billion, Facebook saw a 59% jump in total revenues to $6.4 billion, mostly from online advertising.

Facebook has been dominating the social media space as well as related online advertising as it seeks to diversify into areas such as messaging, virtual reality and other fields.
The research firm eMarketer estimates that Facebook is taking in two-thirds of social media ad revenues, dominating rivals such as Twitter, which this week reported disappointing results.

Kabali film review: Weapon of mass attraction

1468339221-5531
The expectations from Kabali are as high as the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, the setting for almost 80% of the movie, not least because it's a Rajinikanth movie. The reasons are varied: the audience need a taste of the Rajinikanth of yore, not a do-gooder Samaritan (Lingaa) or a CGI generated version of a warrior Prince (Kochadaiiyaan). Thalaivar fanatics just wanted him to have fun, which was rarely the case ever since Sivaji. The teasers of Kabalisuggested Rajinikanth is back to his glory days of BashaPadayappa and Pedarayudu.

You wanted badass, you get industrial levels of badass in this Pa Ranjith movie. His previous film Madras had a delightful off-kilter sensibility. Sadly, here he spends too much time deifying his larger-than-life protagonist. And that makes the movie a giant 150-minute slog.

It opens with the erstwhile gangster getting released from a Malaysian prison after spending 25 years there. As soon as he steps out, he's apprised of how his rival gang (consisting of Kishore and Winston Chao) has grown from strength to strength and has turned the city into a teeming hub of drug abuse and prostitution.

Kabali starts cleaning up right away, while getting reunited with his daughter and wife along the way. You have to be punch drunk on Rajini mania to sit through the movie without dozing off or trying to play Pokemon GO at the cinema itself. The only saving grace is the man himself. The wizened visage hasn't lost a bit of its grace and infectious scowl.(more)

Trump and his running mate contradict themselves on NATO issue

Mike Pence, Donald Trump
The Republican campaign sparked a controversy when party's presidential nominee Donald Trump and his running mate Mike Pence expressed contradicting views on America's North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) allies.
In his vice-presidential acceptance speech, Pence said that Trump would rebuild the military and stand with the allies of the United States.
But in an interview to The New York Times, Trump said that the US under his presidency might not come to the defence of some NATO members if Russia were to attack them.
The Republican presidential nominee said that his decision would be based on the whether those countries have fulfilled their obligations to NATO.
The rival Clinton campaign slammed Trump and Pence for their differences on this crucial issue.
"Tonight, Mike Pence said Donald Trump would stand with our allies. Tonight, Donald Trump flatly contradicted him," said the Hillary for America Senior Policy Adviser Jake Sullivan.
"Ronald Reagan would be ashamed. Harry Truman would be ashamed. Republicans,Democrats and Independents who help build NATO into the most successful military alliance in history would all come to the same conclusion: Donald Trump is temperamentally unfit and fundamentally ill-prepared to be our Commander in Chief," he said. Read More

Republican leaders denounce Clinton in Cleveland convention

Paul Ryan
Top Republican leadership on Wednesday held a mock criminal-style trial before the American public against Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, saying she is not fit to be an occupant of the White House and the safety and security of the country cannot be left on her.
Soon after Donald Trump was declared the presidential nominee of the Republican party, speakers after speakers of the Republican party went after Clinton with New Jersey Governor Chris Christie turned the audience into an ad hock jury by asking if the 68-year-old former secretary of State was guilty or not guilty.
After every charge-sheet, the cheering crowd pronounced her "guilty" shouting "lock her up".
"I am proud to say that the voice of the people of our nation is being heard in this hall and those voices want Donald Trump to be the next President of the United States. But this election is not just about Donald Trump. It is also about his Democratic opponent, Hillary Rodham Clinton," Christie said.
"We know exactly what four years of Hillary Clinton will bring: all the failures of the Obama years, but with less charm and more lies. It is our obligation to stop Hillary Clinton now and never let her within 10 miles of the White House again," he said.(Read more)

Turkey rejects EU Commissioner's claim that it prepared arrest lists before coup

1468826345-8091
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has strongly rejected claims that Turkey's government had prepared arrest lists before Friday's failed coup attempt, Anadoluagency reported on Monday.
Speaking in Brussels on Monday, European Union's Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn was quoted as saying: "It looks at least as if something has been prepared. The lists are available, which indicates it was prepared and to be used at a certain stage."
He was speaking after the failed coup attempt in Turkey on July 15 which claimed more than 200 lives and injured thousands. More than 6,000 suspects have been arrested in connection with the plot, including military figures and judges.
Cavusoglu later tweeted that Hahn "is far from thoroughly comprehending what is going on in Turkey". He added that Turkey's "primary expectation" from its European allies was their "support [for] the democratic process in Turkey and strong condemnation of the coupattempt".
"Turkey will never compromise on human rights, the rule of law and democracy," Cavusoglu said, adding: "Therefore, no one, including Mr Hahn, can prejudge the ongoing legal process regarding the bloody coup attempt in Turkey."
Meanwhile, Foreign Ministry spokesman Tanju Bilgic also strongly rejected the claims, describing them as "prejudiced". Read More

Chinese fury continues against South China Sea judgement

article-doc-d37i7-1e32uiucwx5a5142b916e850e14d-407_634x408
China continues to resolutely oppose the Permanent Court of Arbitration's (PCA) landmark decision handed down on July 12 against its maritime claims in the South China Sea.
Indeed, Beijing has redoubled its months-long campaign to invalidate the 2013 case that ThePhilippines brought against it.
The PCA gave a comprehensive verdict in Manila's favour. In its 501-page report the tribunal found Beijing violated no fewer than 14 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) provisions, six international regulations preventing collisions at sea and one general rule of international law.
China's recalcitrance was highly visible during the Public International Law Colloquium on Maritime Disputes Settlement held in Hong Kong on July 15 and 16, jointly organised by the Chinese Society of International Law (CSIL). Read More

Success of Pokemon GO adds impetus for change at Nintendo

1468774722-7822
The phenomenal success of Pokemon GO and the surge in Nintendo Co's market value by $17 billion in just over a week has been seized upon by one of its most vocal investors to press for a change of strategy at the company.
Until Pokemon GO, a mobile game, was launched just over a week ago, Nintendohad taken every opportunity to say its main focus was still gaming consoles, and games for smartphones were just a means to lure more people to them.
But the success of Pokemon GO - unforseen even by its creators - has shown the potential for augmented reality and for Nintendo to capitalise on a line-up of popular characters ranging from Zelda to Super Mario.
Seth Fischer, founder and chief investment officer at Oasis Management, is one of Asia's best known hedge fund managers and has long been a small but loud shareholder. Encouraged by the success of mobile games like "Candy Crush", he has campaigned for years for the Japanese console maker to develop and sell games for platforms run by Apple and Google.
"I hope they will now understand the power of smartphones," Fischer told Reuters. "And as a result, I hope this means there is a whole change in strategy." Read More

Pokemon Go, getting you out of your couch

1468421839-5358
Pokemon has made a strong comeback this year with Nintendo's location based game for Android and IoS called 'Pokemon Go'. Facebook's timeline, Instagram and Twitter feeds are loaded with hunters prying around streets catching pokemons in exchange for points and level ups.
So, I wondered what the craze was all about and downloaded the .apk file (since theapp is yet to be released in India).
While there is nothing to brag about the Interface of the game, the main highlight, in my opinion is that it makes you 'walk'. This is unlike any 'trending' game to have ever been released.
I'm quite confident that if I keep playing on, not only would I have a handsome inventory of pokemons, my legs would thank me for finally getting my couch potato self outside. (More)

Samsung SUHD 55KS9000: Great all-rounder

1468774781-0921
There was lava all around and it seemed the end of the world was near. Yet, at the very last moment, the captain expertly manoeuvred his ship to escape into the realm of the unknown - space. It was one heck of a voyage, and by the end of it, I was drenched in sweat. The air-conditioner was off!
Coming back to reality, I was watching an ultra-high definition version of Star Trek: Into the Darkness in my living room on the Samsung SUHD 55KS9000 (Rs 2.99 lakh) and I had managed to switch off the AC in my engrossed state. Surveying the stars in pitch black, I was startled when the camera suddenly panned to a shot within the spaceship - it was all so clear and brilliant, yet didn't hurt the eye.
The TV from Samsung's latest line is a stunner. Sporting a curved screen, it is practically devoid of a bezel; the smooth lines continue on the back - possibly the most aesthetic I've seen on a TV till date. (Read More)

Clashes between forces, putschists at Turkish air base

1468656716-2801
Turkish security forces and putschists briefly clashed at an air base in the central city of Konyatoday, a Turkish official said.
"We are able to confirm that there are clashes at the air base in Konya between the security forces and putschists resisting arrest," the source told AFP on condition of anonymity.
The state-run news agency Anadolu later reported the fighting had come to an end and said six military personnel were arrested.
Seventy generals and admirals were taken into custody across the country, the agency added, as the authorities cracked down on suspected backers of Friday's failed military coup.
The Turkish Air Base official also confirmed an incident at Istanbul's Sabiha Gokcen airport, where police fired warning shots at putschists who were resisting arrest. They eventually surrendered.
Earlier today, Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said around 6,000 people had been detained in "clean-up operations" and predicted that the number would rise.
Among those arrested were senior army commanders, judges, prosecutors and a military aide to Erdogan, Ali Yazici, who had only been working for the president since August last year, Anadolu reported.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has put the blame for the coup on supporters of his arch-foe, US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, whose Hizmet movement has had much influence within Turkish society, including the media, police and judiciary.
The government said that 265 people lost their lives in the attempted coup, including 161 civilians and regular troops. A total of 104 coup plotters were killed, the military said.

France terror attack: Facebook activates Safety Check tool

1408297770-4457
Facebook on Friday turned on its Safety Check Tool feature after a large truck mowed through a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in Nice, France, killing at least 80 people.
According to CNET, it is the third time in nearly a month that the social networking giant has activated the tool.
The feature allows people to notify their friends if they are in the affected area and mark themselves as safe.
A click or tap on the "I'm Safe" button lets friends and loved ones know straight away. Users can also check to see whether their friends are safe too.
"Last month, we began testing features that allow people to both initiate and share Safety Check on Facebook," a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement.
"We hope the people in the area find the tool a helpful way to let their friends and family know they are OK," the spokesperson added.
The feature was activated in early June after the deadly attack on a Florida night club that claimed the lives of 49 people.
Less than two weeks later, Facebook activated Safety Check feature for users after a suicide attack that killed 45 people at Istanbul's Ataturk airport.
