Flights to Doha longer as Indian carriers skip UAE; take Pak, Iran routes

Flights from Mumbai and Kerala will also have to transit through these routes due torestrictions

Current Affairs : Fliers from India will now spend an additional half hour on their flights to Doha, with the worsening crisis in the Persian Gulf prompting carriers to skip airspace over the UAE.
Air India Express, IndiGo and Jet Airways operate flights between Indian cities and Doha. Flights out of Delhi fly over Pakistan and Iran to reach the Qatari capital. Those from Mumbai and Kerala used to fly over Oman and the UAE. These will now also fly over Pakistan and Iran.
On Monday, Saudi Qatar Rift , the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt and Yemen severed diplomatic ties with Qatar, accusing Doha of supporting terrorism. They also suspended air, sea and land transport.
The UAE also asked all foreign airlines to obtain prior clearance to use its airspace for Doha flights. The situation worsened on Tuesday, with Bahrain and Saudi Arabia revoking the licence of Qatar Airways to operate in their territory.
With tension high, India airlines are preparing to deal with the crisis.
“All scheduled flights to and from Doha will operate on the alternative northern routes via Iran, avoiding the UAE airspace,” said a Jet Airways spokesperson. “As a result, flights will be 10 to 40 minutes longer.”
He added the airline was planning to augment its crew to deal with the additional flying time.
Jet is also trying to get clearance from the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) of the UAE to fly over the country. “Our schedules have been provided to the GCAA. Once approved, we will be able to resume operating on the normal routes,” the airline said.
Last year, around 1.6 million passengers travelled between India and Doha, making it the fifth-busiest destination in the Gulf for travellers from here, after Dubai, Muscat, Kuwait and Jeddah. This figure does not include onward traffic.
Qatar Airways flies to 14 cities in India; 70-80 per cent of its passengers travel onward.
Aviation sources said Qatar Airways might drop fares to sustain its bookings. “Qatar relies on traffic from its neighbouring countries. Now, the airline will depend more on India and other such nations to fill up its flights to Europe and the US.”
Air traffic to the Gulf is thin during Ramzan, but domestic airways have experienced an increase in booking. This is because those who had booked one-stop flights, through Dubai or Sharjah, are now buying tickets on other flights, a sector executive said. Read More

Air India to fly Dreamliner on domestic routes

Air India plans to get back its lost status as the king of domestic skies and challenge the competition from IndiGo. The state-owned airline plans to raise its capacity on domestic routes by using wide-bodied Boeing 787 Dreamliner planes on high-capacity routes.

Currently, it uses the narrow-body Airbus A320 on such routes. Simultaneously, the airline will fly the A320s between the Tier-II and Tier-III cities, which experts believe has a huge potential due to the government’s stress on regional route expansion.

Domestic air traffic to cross 100 million in FY17: CAPA

Aviation consultancy CAPA estimates domestic air traffic to touch 100 million by the end of FY2017.

“We expect close to 20 per cent  year-on-year growth in domestic market and  growth could exceed even further,” said Kapil Kaul, CAPA’s chief executive (South Asia) in Mumbai on Wednesday.

Growth was driven by low fares and average domestic fares were 15-20 per cent lower in 2015. International traffic growth is estimated at 10 per cent and could cross 12-14 per cent in the event of abolition of 5/20 norms.

IndiGo listing: Short-term investors can book profit, say analysts

Shares of Interglobe Aviation, the company that operates low cost carrier IndiGo,  up 12 per cent as compared to its initial public offer (IPO) price of Rs 765 per share.
On the National Stock Exchange (NSE), hit a high of Rs 899.5 in intra-day deals and a low of Rs 849 with over a million shares being traded in the first 30 minutes. The company had raised Rs 3,009 crore though the IPO, which was subscribed a little over six times.
Stock strategy
With over 15% listing gain, should you book profit in the counter or look at adding more to your portfolio?
Analysts suggest that investors who got the allotment during the and can hold the stock only from a short-term perspective should book profit given listing gains. However, those in for the long haul, say two - three years, can stay put and get the likely benefit of a handsome dividend as well.
G Chokkalingam, founder and managing director of IndiGo listing & Advisory, explains: "While the long-term investors who would like to hold beyond a year can stay invested, short-term investors may consider booking profits as at current price. The stock trades around 17x FY16 estimated EPS (earnings per share). In FY15, its profits grew exponentially, but similar rate of growth is not possible going forward as scope for further steep expansion in the margin is limited."
"However, the long-term investors who can hold the stock for two to three years may hold the stock, as we believe that the aviation business in India would become a significant growth story in the medium-to-long term," he adds.

Jagannadham Thunuguntla, head of fundamental research at sees the gains on listing as a good news for the aviation industry in general. The strong listing, he feels, could prove to be a catalyst for the primary market.
"The upcoming aviation policy of the government, which is likely to be announced soon, will give more clarity on how the government envisages the future of the aviation industry. Having said that, the aviation industry faces a lot of challenges like low margins, stiff competition and high taxes. Even the crude oil prices are low now, but we don't know how long they will remain subdued," he cautions.
On the other hand, institutional players who have a large appetite for this kind of a product in the aviation space are likely to stay invested, suggests Deven Choksey, MD and CEO, K R Choksey Shares and Securities. He expects them to buy the stock at lower levels given the kind of growth and the expansion the company has undertaken.
But this investment philosophy, he says, may not apply to the retail investors and suggests they book part profit given the listing gains.
"From a long-term perspective on a fundamental basis, the company is on a strong footing. Another aspect here is that over the next few years, the promoters will have to bring down their stake to 75% in the company as per regulations. So whenever one invites new investors, the pricing generally tends to be higher. This is likely to be the situation with IndiGo as well. I expect the stock to remain at higher levels, going ahead. That apart, the  To those investors who want to stay on for the dividend going ahead, may stay invested for the long haul."
